Why I’ve Sponsored MIST Atlanta for Over a Decade

Every year for over a decade, the Awad Law Firm has been the official sponsor of MIST Atlanta — the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament. It is one of the things I am most proud of, and it has nothing to do with marketing or business development. It is about investing in the next generation of Muslim American leaders.

MIST is a national organization that brings together Muslim high school students for academic, artistic, and athletic competition. Think of it as a combination of a science fair, debate tournament, art exhibition, and athletic meet — all designed to help young Muslims develop confidence, showcase their talents, and build connections with other young people who share their faith and values.

Why MIST Matters to Me Personally

I grew up in Dalton, Georgia — a small town in the northwest corner of the state. There was no MIST when I was in high school. There were very few spaces where young Muslims could come together, celebrate their identity, and develop leadership skills. I had to find my own path, often as one of the only Muslim students in my school.

That experience shaped me in ways that ultimately made me stronger. It drove me to compete in 250 martial arts tournaments, to earn a Summa Cum Laude degree from Kennesaw State University, to pass the bar on my first attempt, and eventually to build a law practice that has recovered over $60 million for our clients.

But I also know how much harder that journey was without a community of peers. When I first learned about MIST Atlanta, I saw an opportunity to give young Muslim students something I never had: a space where they could be proudly Muslim, fiercely competitive, and surrounded by peers who understood their experience.

What Sponsoring MIST Looks Like

Our sponsorship of MIST Atlanta goes beyond writing a check — although financial support is critical to keeping the tournament accessible to all students regardless of their family’s financial situation. We support the organizational infrastructure that makes MIST possible, and I personally attend events to connect with students and their families.

At MIST, I have watched young Muslim women dominate debate competitions. I have seen first-generation American students deliver speeches about their identity with a confidence that would impress a courtroom jury. I have met future doctors, engineers, lawyers, and entrepreneurs who are developing their skills in an environment that celebrates both their faith and their ambition.

These are the leaders who will represent our community in every field — and MIST gives them the foundation to succeed.

The Connection Between MIST and My Legal Career

People sometimes ask what a personal injury law firm has in common with a Muslim youth tournament. The answer is everything.

My faith — Islam — teaches that success is not just about what you achieve for yourself. It is about what you contribute to your community. The concept of sadaqah jariyah — ongoing charity whose benefits continue long after the initial gift — is one of the most important principles in my life. Sponsoring MIST is sadaqah jariyah in action. The confidence, skills, and connections these students gain will benefit their communities for decades to come.

My faith also taught me the principle of beautiful patience — sabr jameel — which I shared in my TEDx talk. It is the same principle that drives how I practice law. The discipline to prepare thoroughly, the patience to wait for the right moment, and the commitment to doing things the right way even when shortcuts are available. These are values I see reinforced in MIST students every year.

Building Bridges in the Atlanta Muslim Community

Atlanta has one of the most vibrant and diverse Muslim communities in the Southeast. Through our MIST sponsorship and our broader community involvement, the Awad Law Firm has built deep relationships across this community — with families, with mosque leadership, with community organizations, and with the next generation of Muslim Americans.

These relationships matter to me personally, but they also make us better attorneys. When a member of the Muslim community is injured in an accident and needs legal representation, they want a lawyer who understands their values, respects their faith, and will fight for them with integrity. They want someone who has been present in their community not just when there is a case to sign, but year after year, investing in their children’s futures.

That is what our MIST sponsorship represents. It is a commitment to this community that extends far beyond the courtroom.

An Invitation to the Community

If you are a parent of a Muslim high school student in the Atlanta area and your child has not yet participated in MIST, I encourage you to learn more. It is one of the most enriching experiences a young Muslim American can have, and I am proud that the Awad Law Firm plays a role in making it possible.

And if you or someone in your community has been injured in an accident, know that the same values that drive our MIST sponsorship — integrity, commitment, and an unwavering dedication to doing what is right — are the values we bring to every case we handle.
